Mammography FAQs – Patient Guidelines
These FAQs help you understand how to prepare, what to expect, and how mammography is performed at UIC Vision.
- Wear a two-piece outfit (separate top & bottom).
- Do not apply deodorant, perfume, talcum powder, or lotions on chest and underarms.
- Bring any previous mammography or ultrasound reports if available.
It’s best to avoid it. If applied accidentally, it will be cleaned before the scan to avoid false results.
-
Mammography may feel slightly uncomfortable due to compression, but it lasts only a few seconds. Compression is safe and helps capture accurate images.
Women who menstruate should ideally schedule the scan one week after their period to avoid breast tenderness and improve comfort and accuracy.
Inform the team beforehand. This information helps the radiologist decide whether diagnostic mammography + ultrasound is required.
Please inform the radiologist and staff immediately. Additional evaluation or ultrasound may be recommended instead.
The entire process takes around 10–15 minutes, with breast compression lasting only a few seconds for each image.
-
If you have dense breasts, lumps, or suspicious findings, your radiologist may add Breast Ultrasound for a more accurate diagnosis.
Inform the radiologist at arrival. Specialized techniques will be used for clearer imaging without causing harm.
Reports are interpreted by Dr. Tejal Shah (Women’s Imaging Specialist). Turnaround is fast, and if further tests are needed, our team will guide you.
You may resume normal activities immediately. If follow-up imaging or consultation is required, UIC Vision will inform you.
